Time-Consuming:
This is the first baby-oriented thing I've ever knit. A friend of mine is expecting her first child, so it seemed as good a time as any to try a baby item! So, here is a pattern for baby booties. I knit them to have a fold-down cuff with a chain-like pattern. All-in-all, these booties are fairly simple, knit in the round, and require only minimal sewing along the bottoms.
For this project, I used Baby Luv wool, which was rather non-descript, but it is roughly a light (3) wool bordering on fine (2). I also used four 3.75mm double-pointed needles, 1 stitch marker, and a tapestry needle.
Sts = stitches.
SM = stitch marker.
PM = place (stitch) marker.
K = knit (k4 = knit 4 stitches).
P = purl (p4 = purl 4 stitches).
P2tog = purl 2 stitches together.
P2togtbl = purl 2 stitches together through the back of the loop.
YO = Yarn over: bring yarn around needle so that it will be knit/purled as a new stitch on the next row.
K2tog = knit 2 stitches together.
Skpsso = slip one stitch, knit one stitch, then pass slip stitch over (with the left-hand needle, take the previously slipped stitch off the right needle and pull it over the stitch knit after it was passed).
Pfyo = pass first yo (yarn over). After 2 yarn overs (yo) are done, the first one is passed/pulled over the stitch(es) to the left on the right needle.
BO = bind off.
Knitting Each Boot:
Cast on 28 sts.
Rounds 1-2: purl (*place SM at the end of the first round).
Round 3: *yo, yo, p2tog, pfyo. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
Round 4: slip 1, *yo, yo, p2tog, pfyo. Repeat from *. Note: this repeat goes until the slipped stitch from the beginning of the round is incorporated into the last p2tog. Replace SM to mark the new round beginning.
Rounds 5-7: purl.
Repeat rounds 3-7 one more time.
Knit 17 rounds.
Dividing the stitches...
Next, knit 9 sts on one needle, then with a second needle, k1, m1, k8, m1, k1. Ignoring the remaining 9 sts on the round for now, turn work so that you are now working the reverse side.
Slip 1, p11, turn work.
Slip 1, k11, turn work.
Repeat these last 2 rows until the 12-stitch flap reaches 12 rows, ending on a knit-side row. After the last stitch is knit, continue the row by picking up and knitting the 6 slipped stitches from along the flap edge on that side. Now the previously-ignored 9 stitches will be knit, and the work will be done in the round again. After knitting the 9 sts, remove the SM, knit 9 stitches, then pick up and knit the 6 slipped sts along the edge of flap on that side. PM to mark new round beginning.
Next round: purl.
Next round: knit.
Repeat these last 2 rounds 2 more times.
Next round: p12, p13, p2tog, p2togtbl, purl to end of round.
Next round: knit.
Next round: p4, p2tog, p2togtbl, p4, p12, p2tog, p2togtbl, purl to end of round.
Next round: knit.
Next round: p10, p11, p2tog, p2togtbl, purl to end of round.
Next round: k3, skpsso, k2tog, k13, skpsso, k2tog, knit to end of round.
Next round: p2, p2tog, p2togtbl, p11, p2tog, p2togtbl, purl the rest of the round. BO the round, leaving a tail long enough to sew up the seam.
